Professional, yet personable – this is an accurate description of Briley Shirah, the head of Russell Thompson Butler & Houston’s tax department. Briley, a Partner in the Firm since June 2005, is an expert in income taxation of businesses and individuals, skilled in all aspects of the accounting profession. In his own, easy-going manner, Briley will ensure that you understand the law as it pertains to you and your company. Don’t expect your meetings to be dry, though, as this outgoing CPA can hold his own in a conversation on anything from accounting reform to SEC football.

Briley joined the firm in 1996 after graduating from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Accounting, Magna Cum Laude, and a Masters of Tax Accounting Degree. Professionally, Briley is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Mobile Chapter of Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants. He has also been a contributor to the Mobile Press Register’s publication, B2B, writing a bimonthly column on business taxation.

His civic commitments include being a parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, a committee director and coach for CYO Sports for St. Ignatius Church as well as board member for McGill–Toolen Catholic High School’s Advisory Council. Briley is also a member of the Rotary Club of Mobile. Former roles include board membership for City of Mobile Police and Firefighters Pension Fund, junior varsity basketball coach and stadium board member at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School, and financial council member for St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.

Briley and his wife Karen are the proud parents of three young boys. When not engaged in work or civic responsibilities, Briley spends most of his time coaching his sons and spending quality time with his family.

When asked “What is RTBH’s greatest strength?”, Briley responds, “cultivating and retaining new talent who are well-rounded and willing to learn and grow in an ever-changing industry.”
